Clark Park Farmers’ Market

Clark Park is home to one of the largest and most well-populated farmers’ market in Philadelphia, and boasts over a dozen vendors manning tables piled high with organic fruits, heirloom vegetables, milk, eggs, cheeses, meats and more. Sweet pastries and breads fresh from Amish ovens line the walkways, and the smells of honey, cut flowers, dried herbs, and chocolates perfume the park.

Visiting the Market

Every Saturday morning, Clark Park blooms with fresh, local produce, flower stands, food carts, and shoppers of all ages and backgrounds.

Clark Park Farmers’ Market operates year round and is located at 43rd Street and Baltimore Avenue. Hours of operation are from May through November from 10am-2pm on Saturdays, and 3-7pm on Thursdays and from 10am-2pm on Saturdays December through April.

UCD works with The Food Trust to organize and promote the enormous Clark Park Farmers’ Market, and to provide shopping tips and education about lesser-known produce. The Food Trust’s goal is to help market-goers and their families understand and enjoy fresh, nutritious and local food.

But the Clark Park Farmers’ Market is more than just an opportunity to buy food and flowers. It’s an integral neighborhood event, where neighbors and visitors come together to talk, shop, and revitalize their community. They can meet the farmers who grow their food and help support local agriculture, all while eating produce more flavorful and sustainable than anything found in a supermarket. All of the farmers at the Clark Park markets accept the FMNP vouchers and WIC checks for fresh fruits and vegetables.
The ACCESS card is accepted at every stand at the market, excepting the prepared food stands.

Little Baby’s Ice Cream

Forest View Bakery

Amish baked goods and groceries. Homemade jellies and preserves, pickles and castup. Some of the doughiest, softest cookies you can find: chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, ginger, molasses and the Lancaster favorite, snickerdoodles. Try an apple dumpling. It’s a fresh apple, cored and roasted with cinnamon until buttery soft, then baked in crispy pie dough. Seasonal sweet breads and pies are very popular: zucchini bread, pumpkin bread and carrot bread, and pecan pies, pumpkin pies and apple pies. This is the stand where you can buy famous Amish whoopee pies: fresh whipped cream sandwiched between two homemade cookies. Our favorite way of eating them is sticking them in the fridge and making ice cream sandwiches. Elmer and his family also bring some fresh slicing breads: white, whole wheat, raisin and honey wheat. Specialties: whoopee pies, sweet breads, sticky buns, apple dumplings, pickled watermelon rinds.

Fahnestock Fruit Farm
Lititz, PA

The Fahnestock Fruit Farm is the only vendor still around from the market’s first year, twelve years ago. If you’re a regular customer to Clark Park, then you know all about their juicy tomatoes and peaches and you’ve tried all their apples and cider. If you’re new to the market, then this should be your first stop. In May, the Fahnestocks bring their greenhouse tomatoes and basil plants. In the summer, it’s peaches and more peaches. In the fall, they bring a wide variety of apples and barn-made cider. The Fahnestock grandchildren are continuing the farming tradition. They’ve started their own garden patch and you’ll also see more and more vegetables: peppers, eggplants, carrots and beans. Specialties: apples and cider in the fall, greenhouse tomatoes and basil plants in the spring and summer, peaches in the summer.

Slow Rise Bakery
Lancaster, PA

Attends: Year-round every Saturday

Specializes in wholesome, nutritious fresh breads and baked goods. Customers line up for Brian’s bread before he arrives at market and often spends the first twenty minutes selling out of his mini-van to patient customers craving their favorite Slow Rise Bread. Seven Grain, Organic Whole Wheat, Sunflower Flax, Organic Sprouted Wheat, Maple Oat, Walnut Raisin, Jalapeno Cheddar: each one has its own fanbase. The baker and founder of Slow Rise, Brian Hernon is very proud of his sourdough breads too, including Sourdough Banana. Other fan favorites: Four Seed Cookies, Maple Walnut Granola, fresh baguettes, brownies and the dogs even like his homemade dog biscuits. Ask Brian what his newest experiments are for the week and you might go home with a loaf of pumpernickel bread made the old fashioned way overnight in the hot ovens, or Irish Soda Bread, or his newest Chocolate Breads. Specialties: Four Seed Cookies, baguettes, sourdoughs, all of his sliced bread flavors.

Landisdale Farm
Jonestown, PA

Attends: Year-round every Saturday

Certified organic produce and grass-fed beef. Also offers CSA shares during the summer. This family grows a wide variety of fruits and vegetables all year round. On sale during the winter: carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale, turnips, rutabagas, potatoes, parsnips, onions, beets, chard, kohlrabi, sweet potatoes, winter squashes, and many more seasonal fruits and vegetables. Look in their coolers and you’ll find all different cuts of their grass-fed beef. This is the perfect stand if you’re interested in maintaining a diet of local, seasonal food or just to watch the seasons change on a farm stand. In the winter, you’ll find lots of hearty fruits and vegetables that won’t freeze in the fields and that store well in the fridge, and then come spring, you’ll see the first green at the market on the Landisdale tables. Specialties: cauliflower, broccoli, sweet potatoes, heirloom carrots, kohlrabi, winter squashes, grass-fed beef.

Margerum Herbs, etc.

Some of the most local food that can be found at Clark Park all year round. Using the fruits and veggies grown on their family farm, Noelle Margerum and her sister Carole still use all the old family recipes to make their jams, jellies and preserves. You’ll also find a wide variety of spices, herbs, tea mixes, dried beans and lentils, honey sticks and dried fruits. Shop here too for local winter fruits and vegetables, like parsnips, onions, apples and winter squashes. Specialties: homemade jellies, jams and preserves. Some of our favorites: sour cherry, pear honey, elderberry and strawberry.

Hails Family Farm
Wyalusing, PA
Distance to Clark Park: 162 miles
Attends: Year-round every Saturday

Fresh milk and dairy products, cheese, yogurts, butter and, if you’re lucky, eggnog. Ask farmer Paul Hails if his whole milk needs to be fortified with vitamins to make it healthy. This is some of the freshest and healthiest milk you can find in Philadelphia and Paul uses it as the base for all of his dairy products. Paul also sells grass-fed beef and eggs. Specialties: whole milk, chocolate milk, yogurt and cheeses, especially the sharp cheddar and muenster.

Eden Garden Farm
Dillsburg, PA
Distance to Clark Park: 120 miles
Attends: Year-round every Saturday

Apples and cider all winter long. The Christophel family knows apples. They also know cider, which they press in their barn every week for market. During the winter, they also bring sweet potatoes, white potatoes, cabbage, onions, and giant winter squash. Try the Hubbard Squash. It might break your knife cutting into it, but it’s got some of the sweetest squashiest flavor you’ll ever find. In the spring, they are usually the first to market with asparagus and strawberries. Specialties: apples and cider, hubbard squash, sweet potatoes, strawberries and asparagus in the spring.

Livengood’s Family Produce
Lancaster, PA
Distance to Clark Park: 70 miles
Attends: December to February

Earl Livengood is a legend among farmers. He’s been coming to Philadelphia to sell his organic fruits and vegetables for over four decades now. On sale at his stand in the winter: wide variety of potatoes, kale, celeriac, beets, winter squashes, collards, chard, chestnuts, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and grass-fed beef and pasture-raised pork. Specialties: cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kale, potatoes, pasture-raised pork.

Pennypack Farm
Horsham, PA
Distance to Clark Park: 30 miles
Attends: Alternating Saturdays starting January 8th, then year-round starting in May

Pennypack Farm is an education center located just 30 miles away from Clark Park. On sale at their farm stand: hearty winter greens, Griggstown sausage, locally made hummus, Lancaster cheeses, and other local products.

Mountain View Poultry
Walnutport, PA

Barb Shelly brings organic poultry, sausages, broths, chilis and eggs to market. Her chickens and turkeys are raised in an open pasture without the use of antibiotics or any other chemicals. Barb is also one mean cook. Try her Barbecue Chicken or her homemade sausages. Specialties: whole chicken and chicken parts, turkeys, turkey sausages, barbecue chicken

Honest Tom’s Tacos

What’s that big line waiting for at the corner of 43rd and Chester? That’s Honest Tom’s Taco Shop and that’s Honest Tom himself taking orders in the window of his psychedelic truck. He rolled onto the scene a couple years ago with a simple idea: take the food from the market and put it in a taco. If you get to the market early enough in the summer, you might see Tom shopping with the farmers for eggs, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, even cilantro for his salsa and guacamole. Just this winter, he joined forces with local sausage-maker Renaissance Sausage and has added a sausage taco to his menu. Specialties: breakfast taco, Stumptown French-pressed coffee.

Melange Tea Cart
Philadelphia, PA

“This is not a hot dog cart,” says the sign on the hot dog cart on the corner of 43rd and Chester. It’s the Melange Tea Cart, run by tea scholar and supreme beverage alchemist Boris Ginsburgs. Boris has a daily selection of over fifteen teas, all made from real tea leaves, all with their own history and story. Each tea is made to order so it is served at the peak of its aromas and flavors. Read his descriptions of the teas before making any selection or just ask him for a recommendation. If you have a cold or are feeling unwell, tell Boris your symptoms and he’ll make his own special blend to lift your spirits and clear your sinuses. We’ve seen him do this for many sniffling customers. Boris also makes one of the finest cups of coffee in the city, brewed with no electricity in an artisanal style using tubes and vessels normally found in a mad scientist laboratory. Specialties: rare international teas mindfully made, Café L’aub coffee, interesting conversations.

John & Kira’s Chocolates

Gourmet chocolates, each one hand-made. John Doyle likes to partner with local farms and growers to incorporate fresh ingredients in his chocolates, including the gardens at the University City High School which grows the mint used in John & Kira’s chocolates. Specialties: chocolate ladybugs, chocolate cherries, fruit squares or just ask: what’s new this week?

Market Day Canele

Enjoy a bite of Bordeaux in the heart of West Philly. The ingredients are fresh whole milk, eggs, sugar, flour, rum, butter, Tahitian vanilla and orange zest. These ingredients are baked in molds brushed with a bit of beeswax to crisp the exterior and to allow the canelé to slip from its mold. You’ve never tasted anything like this.

This stand is a show-stopper. The King Family from Gap, Pennsylvania, turn Clark Park into the land of Oz. You’ll be able to mix and match their beautiful cut flowers and decorative grasses to create your own arrangement, or ask Mr. or Mrs. King to make your bouquet. Specialties: cut flowers, zinnias, potted herbs.
